With the NASCAR ACDelco Super Late Model 2009 season at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale reaching its halfway point Position One Motorsports driver Luis Martinez Jr # 03-King Taco/Eibach Springs/Molecule sits eighth place in the Championship standings with 252 points, just 34 points away from seventh. Martinez's rookie teammate Mackena Bell # 30-NASCAR Drive for Diversity/ Mackena Bell Motorsports/ K. Dub Creative Web Design/ K. Bell Tile & Marble/Sciarroni Bros Racing, McBride Machine/Bell Helmets/NGK Spark Plugs stands in twelfth place with 212 points. Both arrived at this weekend's race, rounds #9 and #10, hoping to improve their standings and Bell looking to get her first top-10 finish of the year.
Qualifying: With the conditions on the track changing from cooler weather to hotter conditions, Martinez led the Position One assault and took to the track first and immediately showed speed and hurled himself to the 3rd spot on the qualifying charts. His teammate Bell followed him in the qualifying order and she happened to be the last car to attempt qualifying. She entered the track and showed speed, cracking the top-10 in the qualifying timesheet by posting the ninth best lap time. This weekend's qualifying effort represents the first time both Position One Motorsports cars have top-10 qualifying results.
Race #1: With seasoned veterans Rip Michaels and Nick Joanides in front of him, Martinez would have an eventful two-race night. At the start of race #1 Martinez took the green flag and got alongside Joanides and immediately went for the pass, for the lead, but Joanides stayed alongside the #03 KING TACO machine and held on to the position. The fight soon went for the 2nd spot with Martinez and Michaels embroiled in the battle for 2nd. Michaels would go on to take the spot away and eventually charged ahead to battle Joanides for the lead. Martinez followed close behind in third. With the 4th place battle well far behind Martinez would end up finishing the race in 3rd place by a sizable margin. This was Martinez's best finish in four races.
Looking to crack the top-10 in results for the first time this season Bell took the green flag and on lap #3 quickly grabbed the 9th place from Rickey Mccray. Sitting comfortably in 9th place, Bell set her focus on the 8th place car of #57 David Ross. The pace of the race was quick and was only interrupted by a caution on lap #11. By lap #31 Bell and the 8th place car were separated by six car lengths. Driving smart and calculated, Bell would go on to finish her race in 9th place, at last cracking that top-10 that had been so elusive for the talented NASCAR Drive for Diversity driver.
Race #2: Starting again in 3rd for Race #2, Martinez took the green flag and with Joanides once again alongside him, they both passed race leader David Ross. Martinez slotted himself in the 2nd spot with Rip Michaels later joining the trio. Michaels and Martinez once again exchanged the 2nd place back and forth with Martinez able to outbrake the track veteran for the first couple of laps. The racing provided excitement to the race spectators in the grandstands with both drivers displaying incredible talent and maturity throughout the side by side action. Martinez eventually settled for the 3rd spot while Joanides and Michaels fought for the lead. With Martinez's closest rival far behind him, the Long Beach resident would go on to finish the race in 3rd by a 7.941 second margin.
Coming off her 9th place performance during the last race, Mackena Bell once again started in the 10th spot and, as she did before, rocketed to the 9th spot on lap #3 by overtaking Rickey Mccray. Bell was able to pull away from the pack behind her but soon realized she had lost ground to the 8th place of # 6 Dave Beat. In the 9 races at this track, Bell has learned many things and one of those lessons is to never stop racing until the checkered flag drops. Sticking to that motto, she dug in and with every lap inched her way closer to Beat. With ten laps left in the race, Bell found herself in a position to compete for the 8th spot. At every turn, Bell went on the inside and attempted the pass but Beat would cut in front of her, narrowly missing her. Bell, showing incredible patience and maturity, raced Beat cleanly and as the race ended, settled for the 9th spot thus completing her very first dual top-10 weekend.
Luis Martinez Jr - Driver: “It was a good night. We thought we would have a little more for Joanides and Michaels after the good practice sessions we had earlier in the day, but hats off to them for driving a great pair of races. Now it's about keeping the consistency of finishing in the top-3 positions for the remainder of the season. I want to thank the Position One Motorsports team and our sponsors for their great effort and support”
Mackena Bell – Driver: “It was a great weekend. I'm so grateful to the team for these 2 results. We've always been close but for a variety of reasons wer’e never able to crack the top-10 so to have two 9th place finishes is an accomplishment. Now we'll move on and try to build off from this. My thanks go to the team, the NASCAR Drive for Diversity program, and my sponsors for their support”
