With Fall like weather greeting them, the Position One Motorsports driver trio of Randel King, Luis Martinez Jr. and Mackena Bell arrived at TOYOTA Speedway at Irwindale looking to capture wins and top-3 finishes. To date, Position One Motorsports has not had a victory in the Super Late Model division and Mackena Bell has not enjoyed a top-5 finish, but despite that statistic, there is a first for everything and this weekend was certainly going to prove that. In front of a full crowd, the Position One Motorsports stable of drivers would go on to do what has not been done before.
S2 Race After a fourth place qualifying effort earlier in the day, Position One Motorsports' newest driver Randel King took the start of the Langers Juice S-2 division race and immediately passed for the third spot. King who currently leads the points chase in the division soon began his attempt to make his way towards the second spot. King fought alongside the #56 of Ryan Reed for the spot and they were soon joined by Reed's High Point Racing teammate #50 Kyle Longmore. King was sandwiched between the teammates but managed to hold off the challenge from Longmore and eventually crossed the finish in third. So far King has finished every race of the season no worse than 3rd. Super Late Model Race #1 Luis Martinez Jr started the race outside the pole position as a result of the race car field being inverted after qualifying. Martinez took the start of the race and without flinching he rocketed out ahead of teammate Mackena Bell who started on the pole. Current division champion Nick Joanides soon inserted himself into the pack and made his charge towards Martinez. By lap # 10, Martinez enjoyed a four car length lead. Martinez and Joanides began to separate themselves from the rest of the pack with a blistering lap pace. On lap #35 Martinez's car got loose going around turn #4. That was all Joanides needed as he scooted alongside Martinez and attempted to take the lead away. Martinez was not going to relent his lead, and a potential first win, and both drivers raced side by side for the last 5 laps. Martinez would go on to keep the lead and the win; his first race win in 35 attempts. His closest finish up until this point was on March 21st when he finished second. For Mackena Bell, this weekend was different. Back in April of this year, Bell lost her beloved grandfather to Lung Cancer and this weekend would have been his 80th birthday. She was dedicating the weekend's pair of races to his memory. She took the green flag start of the race on the pole, next to her teammate Martinez. Bell focused her battle with the # 6 of Dave Beat and later initiated a fierce battle with the #95 of Bear Rzesnowiecky for the 5th spot. Both racers raced side by side for a while with neither of them giving anything away. The on-track exchange allowed the #12 of track veteran Rip Michaels to creep up alongside them. Bell soon went into defense mode and staved off Michael's challenge and managed to finish the race in the sixth spot, which tied her best finish yet. Bell would have one more shot at attaining the top-5 result she was aiming for this weekend. Super Late Model Race #2 Looking to repeat his earlier win, Luis Martinez Jr. began the race #2 and soon began to experience trouble. By lap # 13 Martinez had slid back to the seventh spot and began fighting off attacks for that position. By lap # 25 Martinez began battling #98 Rickey Mccray for eighth but the #03 KING TACO machine was unable to protect the position and rather than putting himself and others in jeopardy, Martinez raced a smart race and instead focused his energies on preserving a top-10 finishing spot. Martinez was able to cross the finish line in the ninth spot. Sensing her chance for a top-5 finish was within grasp, Mackena Bell took the green flag for race #2 and began her charge from the sixth spot. On lap #5 she passed teammate Martinez for the fifth spot, with the #95 of Bear Rzesnowiecky following her close behind. The battle between Bell and Rzesnowiecky intensified but Bell was determined not to let this one slip away. On lap # 25, Bell was now joined in a 3-way fight with Rzesnowiecky and Rip Michaels. Bell took the inside and passed Rzesnowiecky for the fourth spot and made her way towards the third place of #6 Dave Beat. With two laps remaining in the race, it looked like Bell would have to settle for a fourth place finish but her sheer determination and grit propelled her forward, and with 4 turns left in the race Bell squeezed passed Beat on the bottom of the track and was successful. With the crowd roaring she went on the finish the race in the third spot. This is Mackena's best finish this year and the ground breaking podium represents the highest finish for a woman driver in a Super Late Model feature race at the TOYOTA Speedway at Irwindale. Randel King - Driver: “This weekend we struggled getting a handle on the car but I'm still very pleased with the finish. Many thanks to my crew members Jaime and Luke and of course the Position One Motorsports organization. I would like to thank King Taco, Molecule, Eibach Springs, and the TOYOTA Speedway at Irwindale for providing us with this world class facility. The big picture for us is to win the Championship and our goal is to add more race wins by the time the year is over.” Luis Martinez Jr - Driver: “I want to thank everyone who got me here; my crew, King Taco, Molecule, Eibach Springs, Position One Motorsports, and my family for their unconditional support. We've been working for a long time to get to this spot and to be able to win at this track, among competitors like Nick Joanides and Rip Michaels, just to name a few, is a great accomplishment. The team and I will continue to strive to get these same results in the future and improve our standings in the points chase.” Mackena Bell – Driver: “A big thanks to the D4D program for their support as well as NGK Spark Plugs, Molecule, and Eibach Springs for their support. Thanks go to Position One Motorsports for their support all year and for giving me a great car. My crew worked so hard for this result and the long hours and hard work paid off tonight and I hope we can improve on this result before the year is out. This was a special weekend and it had a lot of significance and to be able to enjoy my best result on this weekend, at this track, is a very special feeling and I am very happy to be in this position.” About Position One Motorsports: After competing in the Formula TR series in 2007 and 2006 and finishing 3rd in the Championship both years, Position One Motorsports entered the 2008 racing season looking to continue its success as a participant in the Whelen All American NASCAR Weekly Racing series events at Southern California's TOYOTA Speedway at Irwindale.
