Sunday, 27 November 2011 00:01

Rookie driver takes win #8 out of 10 races and tops that by winning his 3rd championship in 3 years, while teammate Luis Martinez Jr races to a 3rd place finish.

November 27, 2011 (Baldwin Park, CA) – In what many observers described as one of the season's most exciting Super Late Model race, Rod Johnson Jr (RJ) fought off a hard late-race challenge from #70 Kevin Thompson to solidify the 8th win of his rookie season, thereby becoming the 2011 Lucas Oil Slick Mist Super Late Model champion at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale. Luis Martinez Jr also took part in this special weekend, joining RJ as his teammate aboard the #30 King Taco entry.  For Luis this was a return to familiar territory and whatever rust he may have acquired since he last drove a Super Late Model was absent, as he raced his way to a solid 3rd place finishing spot.

OVERCOMING PAIN, ROD JOHNSON JR TAKES SEVENTH TOP-3 FINISH OF THE SEASON PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 10 September 2011 23:00

September 12, 2011 (Baldwin Park, CA) - It was a special night at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale.  The track remembered the 10th anniversary of the 9-11 tragedy by honoring firefighters and first responders.  With the American flag proudly waving in the background, the crowd was ready to honor those heroes as well as see some exciting racing, which is what they got.  It was also the penultimate night of competition for the Lucas Oil Slick Mist Super Late Model season. With 2 more races left in the season the Position One Motorsports group, including its driver Rod Johnson Jr, arrived this weekend with a 36-point lead in the championship and were looking forward to putting more distance between them and the 2nd place of Ryan Partridge.  After suffering a fracture in his foot as a result of a freak tire blowout that occurred on August 20th during the Late Model race, the night would be a long and painful one for RJ, but the 21 year old would weather through the pain and take home his 7th top-3 finish of the season.
