Position One Motorsports Duo Martinez and Bell Have a Strong Showing at Twin Events

Rounds #8 and #9 of the NASCAR ACDelco Super Late Model 2009 season arrived amid cloudy conditions, but for Position One Motorsports drivers Luis Martinez Jr # 03-King Taco/Eibach Springs/Molecule and Mackena Bell # 30-NASCAR Drive for Diversity/ Mackena Bell Motorsports/ K. Dub Creative Web Design/ K. Bell Tile & Marble/Sciarroni Bros Racing, McBride Machine/Bell Helmets/NGK Spark Plugs the outlook was anything but dreary. Both drivers have continued to make progress throughout the season and arrived this weekend with positive outlooks and a renewed determination to succeed at the famed ½ mile.

With 13 races left, Martinez and Bell were looking forward to the next phase of the 2009 season starting with this weekend's twin events.

Qualifying:
After a full day of practicing and the ensuing adjustments on both the #30 and #03 entries, both drivers lined up for qualifying. Both hoping to cash in on their practice efforts. Martinez was first on track and the sophomore quickly displayed his talents by carving his #03 around the track for 2 laps, resulting in third place. At the conclusion of the session, after each driver had put in their times, Martinez ended up in fourth. Last on track was Bell who stormed onto the ½ mile and skillfully maneuvered her #30 entry around. Prior to her qualifying Bell and her team experimented with different shock packages in preparation for her qualifying. As her team watched, she propelled herself to the 13th spot.

Race #1:
With thunderclouds and the ever present threat of rain looming off in the distance, the 20-car field took to the track for race #1. Once the green flag dropped it became evident that Martinez's car was struggling, as he began to lose positions. Sliding back to the sixth spot, Martinez eventually managed to fight to stay with the leaders and not lose anymore ground for the time being. Catching up to the #01 of Danny Gay on lap #22 Martinez began fighting for the fifth spot. Unfortunately, as the KING TACO entry continued to struggle, and unable to get around Gay, the #09 of Dan Moore caught up to the both of them and made the pass on lap 28. With the race coming to a close, Martinez kept his cool and was able to finish in the seventh spot.
Bell's race #1 performance showed once again why she was chosen to be a NASCAR Drive for Diversity program participant. At the start of the race Bell lost ground and dropped back to sixteenth but she kept her composure and soon retook 3 spots. On Lap 23, she caught up to the twelfth place of Rickey McCray. After several laps of setting him up, she finally made the pass on lap 27 in dramatic fashion. With the clock winding down, Bell eventually put a sizable gap between her and McCray. She hammered down and began catching up to the tenth place car, but time had run out and she took the checkered flag in eleventh, with McCray in the distance.

Race #2:
With Race #1 in the history books the Position One Motorsports team led by Larry Nava, crew Chief for #30 and John Schuetze, crew chief for the #03, began prepping the cars for Race #2. Martinez and Bell took to the track and again Martinez's car showed signs of struggling. Doing his best once again, Martinez maintained his raciness and tried to protect his fourth place starting spot. His fortunes worsened throughout the race and eventually ended up in the eighth spot by the close of the race. With 2 laps left, the #05 of Travis Thirkettle had managed to catch up. With the #05 in his rear view mirror, Martinez protected his position and eventually quelled the threat finishing in eighth. This represents Martinez 6th top-10 in 9 races, with his best finish coming at round #1 when he garnered a 2nd place finish.
Following up on her eleventh place performance, Bell started race #2 in fifteenth spot. She soon lost a position, falling back to the sixteenth spot by lap 3. Resolute, Bell displayed her fierceness and quickly caught up to the #31 of Duane Hunt Jr. and the #55 of Jeff Eshleman on lap #15 and in one fell swoop passed the duo, snatching up the thirteenth spot. Bell charged towards the front and began battling for twelfth. After some exciting back and forth racing, with tire marks on her side to prove it. The youngster from Carson City would eventually cross the finish line in the thirteenth spot.

Luis Martinez Jr - Driver:
“I'm happy that we were once again able to get two top-tens this weekend. The whole #03 Position One Motorsports crew did a great job all day and we were happy that, at the end, while the car may not have been perfect, we were able to get some valuable points and bring the car back in good condition so we can prepare ourselves for our next race weekend. Again, my thanks go to the guys on the crew and our sponsors. Mackena and I have some great sponsors supporting us and I really want to thank them”

Mackena Bell – Driver: “"My guys worked very hard on trying to figure out new things and I think we are right there once more. That top-ten is right around the corner and my team is very deserving. I want to thank D4D, Position One, NGK and Eibach Springs for their continued support. We will be back in two weekends and I'm hoping that I can get that top-ten for the whole #30 team and my Dad for Fathers Day!”
