Position One Driver Sergio Peña Tests a Speed Truck

There is much activity occurring within the confines of the Position one Motorsports Baldwin Park, California headquarters.  With a double header weekend fast approaching, the team’s NASCAR ACDelco Super Late Model crew is working feverishly to prepare the cars, while the karting division continues its hectic pace planning for upcoming events, in two weeks driver Luis Martinez Jr makes his second appearances with the Golden Gate Racing Team at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale and now add testing Sergio Peña in a Speed Truck to the list.

Peña has  raced with the Position One Motorsports squad before in various events and on August 07, 2008 he tested an ASA Speed Truck at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale.  Position One Motorsports partnered up on this test with Randel King Racing.  Randel King is one of Position One's sponsored drivers and the team was available to assist Peña during his first venture in a Speed Truck.

A native of Winchester,  Virginia, Peña who is 15 years old, joins many of his karting kin in exploring NASCAR racing as a step up in their racing careers and looking to take that next step with Position One Motorsports.  Even at his young age Peña has a diverse racing background that includes racing go karts and Formula Renault 1600 cc.

The mercury reached a blistering 95 degrees at Irwindale and with that Peña suited up and took to the track.  The first session served to get the youngster comfortable with his new surroundings, as Peña had never raced on an oval.   Quickly adapting to the ½ mile oval, Peña soon discovered how driving a 2,450-lb, 375-horsepower, V-8 Speed Truck  paled in comparison to driving a 135 hp Formula Renault.  With each session under his belt and his confidence gaining, the speeds gradually increased and by the end of the evening Peña's times were extremely competitive.  In fact, using the times that were recorded, Peña would have qualified top-10 if this was a qualifying session.  Peña ran over 50 laps at the Speedway.

Both Scott King, principle of the Randel King Racing and Position One Motorsports principle Luis Martinez were very happy at Peña's performance.  The test assured Peña that circle track racing was definitely within his abilities.

Sergio Peña – Driver: “I didn't expect it to be as exciting and fun as it was but truthfully I had a blast and the test really exceeded my expectations in every way.  I was impressed by how hard you can drive the Speed Truck and the differences between driving this and a Formula car.  I cant' thank Luis from Position One and Scott and the crew from Randel King Racing enough, they really came through today."

Scott King –  Owner: “Sergio's performance was awesome.  When you compare where he started and where he ended, it was night and day and it just shows his progress as he got more comfortable with the truck.  His times were very competitive, so much so that he would have qualified very well had this been a Speed Truck qualifying session and considering this was his first time in an oval says volumes about Sergio's talents”
